Rehabilitation and assistive technology are crucial for optimizing functioning, health and well-being of persons with health conditions and integral part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

However, coverage of rehabilitation services and assistive technology is highly variable or absent, in particular in low and middle-income countries. As a result, they often represent a significant out-of-pocket expense, unaffordable for the large majority of the world’s population.

In the lead-up to the United Nations’ High Level Meeting on UHC, which will mark the adoption of a new Political Declaration, the global webinar will make the case for the effective integration of rehabilitation and assistive technology in UHC policies and mechanisms.

The panel discussion will leverage the voices and stands of rehabilitation and assistive technology stakeholders in the broader UHC-related debates, and highlight examples of these efforts. Panellists include (in alphabetical order):

  • Andrew Mubangizi: Assistant Commissioner at the Disability & Rehabilitation Division, Ministry of Health (Uganda)
  • Eliana Monteforte: Director, Special Projects at the Global Health Council
  • Kylie Shae, Team leader for assistive technology at the World Health Organization
  • Nistha Shrestha: Deputy Chief Physiotherapist at the Ministry of Health and Population (Nepal)
  • Tamara Chikhradze: Program Director at Results for Development
  • Yaye Sophietou Diop: member of the Advisory Group of the Civil Society Engagement Mechanism for UHC 2030

This global webinar is co-organized by the Learning, Acting & Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems (ReLAB-HS), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with: the Civil Society Engagement Mechanism for UHC2030, the Global Health Council, and Results for Development.
