Advancing UHC through Self-Care: A Transformative Approach for People and Health Systems

Hosted by Self- Care TrailBlazer Group (SCTG)

The unprecedented disruptions to foreign aid have significantly impacted the global health sector, undermining decades of progress and pushing fragile health systems further into crisis. The scale and speed of these transformations demand urgent attention and creative solutions. Evidence-based self-care approaches, particularly for sexual and reproductive health and rights, are more critical than ever. As we witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, self-care helps reduce pressure on strained health systems, making them more resilient. While it is not a substitute for a government’s responsibility to provide quality health services, self-care can reduce the burden on health workers, facilities, and budgets — ensuring that resources are available to manage conditions that require the support of providers. This dynamic, interactive session will address why self-care should be at the heart of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. It aims to raise awareness and mobilize Member States to explicitly and directly acknowledge and champion the vital role of self-care — ultimately mainstreaming this innovative approach within UHC actions at the global and national levels.
