Background:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) progress on UHC (target 3.8) has stalled, with most recent estimates showing at least 4.5 billion people ? more than half of the world?s population ? lack access to essential health services. Financial protection has progressively deteriorated over the last 20 years, with 2 billion people experiencing financial hardship and impoverishing health costs due to out-of-pocket health spending. It is still possible to stop backsliding and achieve UHC by 2030, if countries act now to translate the commitments, they made in the 2023 Political Declaration on UHC into concrete actions.

Given the alarming deterioration of financial protection, this year?s UHC Day theme is Health: it?s on the government. The 2024 UHC Day campaign will focus on urging countries to translate their UHC commitments into laws, budgets, policies, and programmes that will protect people from financial hardship when they access health services.

The objectives of this second UHC Day campaign advocacy webinar are to share the latest 2024 UHC Day campaign materials available, hear advocates’ stories, and plan impactful actions for UHC Day. Together, we can urge governments to prioritize universal health coverage and protect millions from devastating health costs

How to engage ahead of the session and become a UHC Day Champion:

First and foremost, thank you for your commitment and active support already for the 2024 Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day Campaign. Together, let?s keep up the momentum, calling on national leaders to transform their UHC promises into concrete laws, budgets, policies, and programs to remove financial barriers to essential health services.

To be actively engaged, we invite you to send your Advocacy Letter Campaign and to participate in the UHC Day video that will amplify voices of civil society and communities by sharing real world experiences in facing financial hardship while accessing care, and calls to action. 1. Advocacy Letter

We are delighted to see that some letters have been sent to decision makers and count some UHC Day Champions already.

You can find all the information on this letter advocacy campaign to customize and send your letter ici before November 27. Only advocates who send letters to their leaders will be considered to take part in the 2024 UHC Day Champion campaign (please let us know by copying laura@wacihealth.org).Please feel free to reach out (or register to open sessions ici) if you have any questions.

2. UHC Day 2024 Stories – share your videos

As we prepare to commemorate the UHC Day Campaign on December 12, 2024, we would like to invite you to share your stories and experiences facing financial hardship in accessing care resulting from out-of-pocket health expenditure under the format of a short video. The aim is to shed light on this critical issue that has been largely ignored and ensure that the voices, stories, and lived experiences of those most impacted are heard. We hope that this will help inspire action from governments to put in place policies, regulations and funding that are critically needed to address this problem.

We invite advocates to upload a short video via this google form responding to one or more of the following questions: What does financial protection mean to you? How did you face financial hardship due to out of pocket health care costs? What is your call to action for your decision makers/ government?
