Preparing for the 2027 UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage
Les 2027 UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage will be an important opportunity for countries to review progress on the commitments made in the 2023 Political Declaration on UHC and identify where greater action is needed.
Members of Parliament have an important role to play by:
- Monitoring progress towards national UHC commitments;
- Using evidence to shape legislation and health financing decisions;
- Holding governments accountable for delivering on UHC commitments; and
- Championing policies that expand access to quality health services and financial protection.

Advancing meaningful social participation for health
Strong health systems are built for people and with people.
Recognizing this, in 2024 WHO Member States adopted the World Health Assembly Resolution on Social Participation for Universal Health Coverage, Health and Well-being. The Resolution calls on countries to strengthen meaningful and regular engagement of communities and civil society in health decision-making.
For parliamentarians, this is an opportunity to strengthen health governance by ensuring that policies, legislation and investments reflect people’s lived experiences and respond to the needs of the communities they serve.
Members of Parliament can help by:
- Promoting national policies and legislation that institutionalize meaningful social participation.
- Strengthening participatory governance through mechanisms that enable communities and civil society to contribute to the health policy cycle?from policy design to implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
- Encouraging governments to report on progress and demonstrate how community perspectives have informed health decisions to promote accountability and transparency.
- Supporting sustainable investment in participatory mechanisms and the capacity of communities and civil society to engage effectively in health governance.
- Convening dialogues between government, civil society, health workers, patient organizations and communities to build more inclusive and people-centred health systems.

Building momentum through UHC Day 2026
Journée UHC is the annual rallying point for the global movement for health for all. It marks the anniversary of the United Nations? historic and unanimous endorsement of universal health coverage in 2012. Each year on 12.12, UHC advocates raise their voices to share the stories of the millions of people worldwide still waiting for health, to call on leaders to make bigger and smarter investments in health, and to remind the world that Health for All is a human right and an imperative to create equitable and resilient societies.
UHC Day offers parliamentarians an opportunity to demonstrate political leadership and engage citizens around the importance of investing in health.
